Organic Mattresses and Futons

When shopping for a mattress, you probably consider comfort first. But most mattresses sold in department stores are sprayed with fungicides, pesticides, and flame-retardants. Synthetic matresses are often made from petrolium based foams, and are topped off with toxic flame retardands in order to counter the dangers of sleeping on an oil field. Yet, its these flame brominated flame retardants - put into the bed in order to ensure "safety" that really pose us the biggest danger. Off-gassing from these bromides have been shown to cause damage to the liver and thyroid, and cause a delay in brain development in young children. Green Home has a complete selection of mattresses, mattress pads and futons - all made from 100% organic fibers, all natural materials, and never containing petroleum distillates or toxic bromides.

Let Green Home help you design the ultimate eco-bedroom. Check out these pages for everything you need.

Tips on buying and Organic Mattress and Futons from Green Home

Let's face it, picking a new bed these days can be as confusing as picking out peanut butter. How does one know if they are going to sleep better on memory foam or natural rubber? How does one know if they like chunky or creamy? The truth is, they are both good, but some people will always prefer one to the other. Since you can't lay down on these mattresses any more then you can bring your spoon to the grocery store, we here at Green Home are doing our best to get you all the facts, so that you can pick an eco-friendly bed that's perfect for your body and Green Home.

Here's the stuffing on what types of materials you'll find inside our all natural and organic mattresses and futons...

Latex:
A milky liquid found in certain plants - such as milkweeds, euphorbias, poppies, or the plants yielding India rubber - that coagulates on exposure to air. Used to make Natural Rubber.

Green Tea Memory Foam:
Where an All-Natural Ingredient: EverGreen™, made from all-natural green tea, is embedded into the memory foam for long-lasting natural odor control.

Memory Foam:
is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that increase its viscosity level, thereby increasing its density. It is often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. Depending on the chemicals used and its overall density, it is firmer in cool temperatures and softer when warm. Higher density memory foam reacts to body heat which allows it to mould itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes. A lower density memory foam is pressure-sensitive and will mould more quickly to the shape of the body.

Natural Rubber:
Flexible material that can recover its shape after considerable deformation. The best-known rubber is natural rubber, made from the milky latex of the rubber tree. Three requirements must be met for rubbery properties to be present in both natural and synthetic rubbers: long thread like molecules, flexibility in the molecular chain to allow flexing and coiling, and some mechanical or chemical bonds between molecules. The major commercial source of natural rubber latex is the Para rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis (Euphorbiaceae). This is largely because it responds to wounding by producing more latex. Synthetic Rubber has the same properties as natural rubber, but is commonly made with petroleum, natural gas, or other sources.

Pure Grow Wool:
A regimen of stringent controls were drafted in Sonoma County, CA to establish what is known as Pure Grow Wool. The result of this program is a distinctive line of woolen products, scrupulously cleaned and created without bleaches, formaldehydes, dyes, or animal cruelty by more than 200 California wool ranchers.

Organic Cotton:
Cotton grown without the use of chemical pesticides, fertalizers, or genetically motified seeds. Though organic cotton has far less environmental impact than conventional cotton, it costs more to produce and is less widely available.
